Marketing effect

I recently got something positive from marketing people. 2 years ago I took a survey. They wanted to know about TV viewing habits and since back then I didn't listen to many podcasts, I watched a lot of TV. After about 1/2 hour on the phone they asked me if they could send me a video tape of a show and then call me a week later to get my response. I said ok and got the tape a coupla days later. It turned out to be some horrible 80's sitcom wannabe. The actors were recognizable has beens and the video style was unmistakable. It had commercials though so, even though they didn't say so, I knew that they were going to be asking me about the commercials. Now I don't usually watch commercials. I'll turn away from a show I love if there are two many commercials. Also I've been running with a series 1 Tivo since they were brand new, so I skip a lot of commercials. I even keep some favorite videos or comedy things on tivo which I will watch when watching a 'live' show. This lets the 'live' show get a head start on me so when I start watching it I can fast forward thru the commercials and see the whole show. Now back to the tape. I watched it, and even left the volume on during the commercials. However they were not memorable commercials. All in all a boring half hour. When they called me back I gave them a thorough critique of the show before they started asking me questions that they wanted to. They were pretty brazen about asking about their razor commercial. The problem was that I couldn't remember the brand of the razor or anything about it. They wrapped up their survey fairly quickly. What they learned from me was that I like cheap razors. I will take cheap over good 9 times out of 10. And if you want to get me to try a 'Superior' product you better give me a coupon for a free sample, cause it aint gonna happen any other way. What I learned is that Gillette wastes a lot of money on market research. But maybe it wasn't a waste, because this week I got a razor in the mail. It's the new Gillette razor with the lots of blades on one side and 1 blade on the other. I've seen the commercial but couldn't tell you the name. I have to say it is a damn fine razor. When it wears down I might just use the coupons they gave me to buy refills for it. So kudos to you marketing people. It took 2 years but you might just have sold me on your new razor.
