Things I've learned
There are many things that my father taught me. Some good, some bad, and some just weird. Now I was looking for dinner tonight and I was recently reminded that I had a pound of bacon in my fridge. So I pulled it out and checked the date, since it has been in there for quite some time. It was dated April 9th. Now sane human beings would sigh at the waste and throw it in the trash. Not me, I subject it to my fathers 4 step program to determine if it's still good.
Step 1: Is there any mold growing on it?
Nope, it's a little grey but otherwise looks normal.
Step 2: Does it smell bad?
Nope, still smells like bacon.
Step 3: Is it slimy? (is the fat in it rancid yet?)
Nope, it's greasy like bacon, but not slimy.
Step 4: Does it taste bad?
Well I wasn't going to taste it raw so I had to cook it to find out and I burnt a lot of it so it is tough to tell its taste. But it did taste like bacon.
As I sat there while it cooked I was thinking how insane it was that I was even thinking about eating it. But every time I thought about just throwing it out I would reconsider and decide just to taste it.
Here is the real crazy part. I couple of weeks ago I had some week old ground beef that was pretty grey. I subjected it to the same test and ended up eating it and it f****d me up for a few days.
So which is stronger: the experience of being sick just a couple of weeks ago or the lessons from my youth about not wasting food?
I compromised. I ate a couple strips and threw the rest out.
